





Solar Thermal Plants Aim to Keep Lights on at Night in Middle East
Solar plants that supply electricity at competitive prices after the sun goes down are about to become a reality in the Middle East, according to one of the region’s biggest developers of power plants. ACWA Power International CEO Paddy Padmanathan confirmed his company is the low bidder on a $1 billion project that will feed electricity to the grid for the Dubai Water & Electricity Authority between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. More such plants are likely to follow because Chinese companies will start driving down the cost of equipment, he said. The 200-MW Dubai contract, which runs for 25 years, will harness a two-decade old technology called concentrated-solar power (CSP), or solar thermal. Unlike solar PV, which generates a charge directly from the sun’s power, thermal plants use mirrors to concentrate heat on water, turning it to steam to drive a turbine. The heat can be stored in molten salt to be used later. The technology to date has slipped behind PV on cost but is quickly becoming more competitive, the executive said. “I expect concentrated-solar power, within 18 months, to be head to head with combined-cycle gas, if not more competitive,” Padmanathan said in an interview in London. “The focus has been on PV and batteries, but there’s a limit on how long they can hold a charge for. We’re proving that CSP can work through the night.” Since it can retain heat, the plant can keep working after dark. The sun’s energy in some cases can heat molten salt to 490 degrees Celsius (914 degrees Fahrenheit), which allows operators to predict when electricity will flow.
Uncertain Outlook
While solar thermal plants are becoming cheaper, PV costs are falling too, raising questions whether the Dubai project really will be as attractive as ACWA expects, said Jenny Chase, head of solar analysis at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. “This plant in Dubai is for delivery by 2021,” Chase said. “By then, we’re expecting solar PV and batteries to be in the same order of magnitude for cost and will be a lot more flexible than a solar thermal plant. Also, a lot of these projects are operating below what they’re meant to, such as the entire Spanish fleet and some in India as well.” There are 319 GW of PV panels installed worldwide, compared to about 5 GW of solar thermal, according to BNEF data. The mass deployment has driven down costs of solar panel equipment by about 70 percent since 2010, with the latest record set in Abu Dhabi at 2.45 cents per kWh. In comparison, solar thermal was around 15 to 18 cents per kWh until recently. China hosts 80 percent of the world’s PV solar manufacturing industry. The nation’s expertise at mass production is credited with making solar panels more affordable, although companies are now reviving work on thermal technology.
More Suppliers
“There are currently just two suppliers in solar CSP,” Padmanathan said. “The others have gone bankrupt. I know of at least five Chinese companies that are starting to enter the market.” ACWA, which is based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, bid 9.45 cents per kWh, almost cutting in half the cost of CSP. Each of the bidders were also asked to submit an alternative tender. The offtaker will choose between the bid and the alternative bid, so the price may be even lower. ACWA has also built similar projects in Morocco’s Noor solar complex and South Africa’s desert. One in each nation are operating, with two more in Morocco and one in South Africa currently under development. ACWA is also seeking to build two more projects in Morocco in the Midelt area, which will have a joint capacity of 350 MW. “I’m also hoping to build one in Saudi,” Padmanathan said. “Right now they’re tendering for solar PV and wind, but I think they’ll want a CSP project as well, especially when they see how cost competitive it can be.”

Šipovo: Prva mikro hidroelektrana u RS
Svečano je bilo na imanju porodice Piljić u Janjskim otokama kod Šipova. Rođaci, prijatelji i poslovni partneri okupili su se na otvaranju prve mikro hidroelektrane u RS. Stari porodični mlin i snaga riječice Janje bili su osnova. Ideja se na porodičnom imanju razvijala nekoliko godina, a danas je struja iz hidroelektrane “Otoke” potekla u elektrodistributivnu mrežu Elektroprivrede RS. Porodica Piljić u ugradnju generatora i opreme uložila je 130.000 marka. “Ja očekujem da će u narednih pet godina biti kompletno otplaćena, njen vijek trajanja je 50 godina i mislim da je to veoma rentabilno i opravdano. Pored mlina i seoskog turizma, sada ćemo imati i prihode od električne energije”, kaže Dule Piljić iz Janjskih Otoka. Pomoć i savjet u gradnji i projektiranju stigli su sa Mašinskog fakulteta i od inženjera Elektrokrajine RS. Glavni izvođač radova bila je firma “Elektromotorni pogoni”. I jednima i drugima bio je izazov da sudjeluju u izgradnji, posebno što je cijeli sistem hidrocentrale djelo domaćih ruku i snaga. “Ljudi ne znaju da je to korisno, jedna porodica može sasvim solidno da se financira pravljenjem ovih mikro hidrocentrala. Recimo, da vam kažem kolike su sad cijene i podticaji za korištenje energije iz obnovljivih izvora. Na 10 kilovata instalirane snage, prihod mjesečni bi trebao da bude oko 1000 maraka”, istaknuo je Darko Knežević, dekan Mašinskog fakulteta u Banjaluci. “Ostavili smo kućicu onakva kakva je bila, cjevovod kakav je bio, samo smo mali vodozahvat napravili iznad mlina da dobijemo dodatni metar pada. I da dobijemo snagu na turbini oko 30 kilovata. Snaga generatora je 30 kilovat ampera u mrežu prosječno može davati i računa je na 22.5 kilovata”, rekao je Sreten Ivić iz firme “Elektromotorni pogoni”. Ovo je samo mali pokazatelj kako se može realizirati dobra ideja. Na promociji korištenja energije iz malih vodenih tokova još više treba poraditi. Posebno bi lokalne zajednice trebalo da pokažu veći interes. Šipovo, Ribnik i druge općine u Srpskoj imaju hidropotencijal koji još nije dovoljno iskorišten. Interes malih investitora postoji, ali potrebno im je pružiti pomoć i savjet da se upuste u investicije.

APPLE CAMPUS 2.0: U njegovo dvorište stane Pentagon!
Uoči večerašnje Appleove konferencije, naišli smo na svježi video materijal, novi pogled na gradilište spektakularne upravne zgrade tvrtke Apple, ovog puta snimljen dronom. Apple Campus 2.0 je impozantna mega građevina, prostire se na čak 280.000 kvadratnih metara, a vrijedna je 5 milijardi dolara. Apple Campus 2.0 gradi se u Cupertinu u Kaliforniji, gdje je Apple i osnovan 1977. godine. Još 2006. godine, kada je pala odluka o gradnji nove upravne zgrade, Steve Jobs je odlučio da neće seliti iz Cupertina na neku dalju, jeftiniju lokaciju. Zemljište za građevinu platili su 160 milijuna dolara. A koliko je ustvari veliki taj svemirski brod od betona najbolji govori podatak da zgrada Pentagona stane u njegovo dvorište. Ako niste znali, Pentagon smatraju jednom od najvećih uredskih zgrada na svijetu. Arhitekti su samo za caffe bar i restoran odvojili ni manje ni više nego 8500 kvadrata. Zgrada koristi zakrivljeno staklo, zidovi su pokretni, ubačen je i poseban centar za prijevoz zaposlenika. Naravno, tu je i veliko predvorje gdje će se održavati buduće Appleove konferencije i razne prezentacije novih proizvoda i usluga. Cijeli kampus će biti izgrađen na četiri kata te će imati oblik krafne (one američke, s rupom u sredini). Veličinu dodatno dočarava i podatak o sedam kilometara prozora koji će se postaviti do kraja izgradnje, koja se predviđa krajem 2016., odnosno početkom 2017. godine. Kako i priliči Appleovoj politici očuvanja okoliša, tako će i nova upravna zgrada biti energetski nezavisna, što drugim riječima znači da će je napajati 70.000 kvadratnih metara solarnih panela na krovu zgrade. U okruženju ove zgrade promjera oko 1.6 kilometara posadit će se više od 17.000 drveća i drugih biljaka. Inače, projekt potpisuje arhitektonski ured Fosters+Partners. SUSTAINABLE POWER SUPPLY FOR CARIBBEAN ISLAND ST. EUSTATIUS WITH THE SMA FUEL SAVE SOLUTION
SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) and its subsidiary SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH have commissioned a PV Hybrid System on the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands, to completely electrify the island with the smart combination of utility scale PV, battery storage and diesel generators. Up until March 2016 the island´s power supply was fully based on diesel gensets. By integrating 1,9 MWp of PV power and 1 MW of batteries with the SMA Fuel Save Controller 2.0, the local utility company is now able to reduce its fossil fuel consumption significantly by up to 30 percent and save more than 800.000 liters of diesel fuel and 2,200 tons of CO2 per year. In 2010, St. Eustatius became a special municipality of the Netherlands. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs decided to make the island and the Statia Utility Company (STUCO) less dependent on imported fossil fuel oils by financing a solar power plant. “We were looking for fossil fuel reduction and at the same time for a solution with both very low maintenance and also stand-alone operation,” Fred Cuvalay, CEO of STUCO, summarized the technical challenges. “SMA provided a hybrid system solution exactly tailored to our needs, which is extremely user-friendly.”
SMA sets a good example for a more sustainable power supply in the Caribbean
“The project fully integrates three different energy sources on a large scale that work together in a harmonized manner: solar power, battery storage and diesel gensets,” said Volker Wachenfeld, Executive Vice President SMA business unit Off-Grid and Storage. The project is designed to generate enough clean solar power to cover more than 23% of St. Eustatius’ annual electricity demand of 13.5 GWh. The Sunny Central Storage 1000 integrated into the SMA Medium Voltage Power Station 1000 enables a measured solar fraction of up to 88% during sunshine hours and supports the grid with stability functions such as frequency regulation, ramp-rate control for smoothing PV power fluctuations and optimization of diesel genset operation. “Rapid movement of clouds in this region, in particular, leads to extreme fluctuations in solar power generation which constrains the integration of large-scale photovoltaics into diesel-based grids,” Wachenfeld commented on one of the challenges. “That's why using large-scale storage systems is meaningful for this application as they minimize the impact of fluctuating energy sources on diesel generators.” “Via SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH, SMA can now offer fully integrated hybrid and large-scale grid-connected battery energy storage systems as a turnkey supplier,” said Fabian Jochem, General Manager at SMA subsidiary SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH. The project also includes a system service contract and a customized PV hybrid monitoring system design for integrated data logging of power management system, PV inverters, battery inverter, diesel generators and the complete storage system, engineered and commissioned by SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH. Local system integrator, Eco Energy N.V. from Curaçao, was responsible for installation of the PV plant. Its experience on Caribbean logistics and high quality workmanship played an important role in realizing this project successfully within the ambitious schedule of 9 months. The installation in St. Eustatius is the first project of its kind in the entire Caribbean region and will likely serve as an example of what’s possible to neighboring islands.

Flagship Project in the Caribbean:
PV Hybrid System on the Island of St. Eustatius
The setting: An island with 4,000 inhabitants and three diesel generators to supply power. The mission: Reduce fossil fuel usage and establish a grid stabilizing energy supply based on renewable energies. The challenge: Supply a smart combination of a 2 MWp PV farm and diesel generators; introduce the largest lithium battery storage system in the Caribbean; use the latest SMA products; and develop a new monitoring platform—within the space of just nine months. The PV farm on the island of St. Eustatius, which includes one of the largest lithium battery storage systems, went into operation in March 2016. Thanks to the SMA Fuel Save Controller, the island is now saving 800,000 liters of diesel a year. I worked on-site as a project manager during the 10-day commissioning process and was part of a fantastic international team. Setting a green example in the Caribbean
To climb the second-highest mountain in the Netherlands at a height of 600 meters, we had to undertake a journey that took approximately 24 hours—from Kassel via Amsterdam to St. Maarten, and from there to St. Eustatius by propeller-driven plane. Sitting majestically above this island of 4,000 inhabitants in the Netherlands Antilles, the extinct Quill volcano is a real landmark as well as being the emblem on the flag. In its checkered history, which has been shaped by trade, slavery and piracy, the island has changed hands a recorded number of 22 times and now has the status of a special municipality in the Netherlands. On the island, also known as Statia, things have been a lot calmer over the past few decades. It is an island on which animals—particularly donkeys, cows, sheep and chickens—roam free. And now the island wants to make a name for itself with its ambitious PV hybrid project and set a green example for the whole region with this flagship project.
Everyone knows about the PV farm
We were already identified as newcomers by the locals while sitting on the 20-seat propeller-driven plane, and were asked about the purpose of our trip. Four flights a day connect Statia with the lifeline of St. Maarten. Of course, the primary objective of our trip was neither the archeological treasures nor the sea turtles of the marine national park, but the PV farm. Absolutely everyone on the island has heard about it. “The solar park? Yes of course, great!”exclaimed the taxi driver, which was a typical response.
Saving 800,000 liters of diesel fuel
Two years ago, the utility company Stuco was spun off from a former group of companies, which included St. Maarten and Saba, to form an independent company. Conserving diesel fuel is expected to improve its operating business figures. The target is to use 800,000 liters less diesel fuel a year. For this purpose, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs is financing construction of a PV hybrid system. In the past, eight PV system managers manually operated the three Caterpillar diesel generators with a nominal power output of between 900 kW and 1,200 kW around the clock. The employees were trained to recognize the smallest changes in frequency or inconsistencies in the operating noise of the generators, so that they could intervene at lightning speed.The genset system is now set to be complemented by a PV farm and a battery storage system. To optimally combine these different energy sources, at SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH we focused on the system design. Despite the more complex system layout, it is designed with automatic operation and low maintenance in mind.
Hurricane-resistant PV modules and protected Sunny Tripower inverters
During our planning and production phase in Kassel, our local partner Eco Energy worked from September 2015 to February 2016 on construction of the 1.89 MWp PV farm. The Sunbelt team in Kassel followed the construction progress live via camera links. To withstand the frequent barrage of hurricanes in the Caribbean without sustaining any damage, extremely pressure-resistant PV modules by Suntech were used on a frame produced by Schletter. The 73 SMA Sunny Tripower 25000TL-30 PV inverters were installed in containers to protect them against corrosion from the sea air.
Customized hybrid system for extreme energy management
SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH was responsible for the overall technical design and on-time delivery of the large-scale storage system, the battery inverter including MVPS as well as the monitoring and control system. The components used included the new Fuel Save Controller and the Sunny Central Storage 1000. Designing the system was made a lot harder by a lack of data on solar irradiation and cloud movements. The battery power of 1 MW and charge rate of 2.5-4C mean that the system is designed for the worst-case scenarios. We have seen battery inverter power outputs of up to 800 kW when the system is in operation, which means that the impact of cloud movement is much greater than we originally thought. But high-performance and flexible energy management can safely offset these extreme step loads. PV penetration is 89%. This means that 89% of the power consumption of around 1.7 MW is covered by solar power. By way of comparison, without a storage system PV penetration of 60% was classed as a very good value.
Trouble-free commissioning
The first week of commissioning went without a hitch. One of the most exciting moments was the first time the battery was discharged into the utility grid via the Sunny Central Storage. This was followed by system functionality tests to check the interaction between the diesel generators and the Fuel Save Controller. Over the course of these tests, we simulated step loads and ramps by connecting and disconnecting the generators. The commissioning process took just 10 days in all. The system functioned perfectly right from the first moment it was switched on. We were excited, especially because this gave us extra time for a Sunday excursion to Quill National Park. In the volcanic crater of the park, we discovered the local wildlife and wild banana trees.This experience served to remind us once again for whom and for what we commissioned this sustainable power supply in the first place—not only for our client Stuco, not only for the 4,000 inhabitants living on the volcanic island, but also to preserve this remarkable flora and fauna.

Malo manje od polovice (u pravilu oko 45%) težine biljke – čini ugljik, a gotovo sve što ima biljka u obliku spoja „C” je došlo od CO2 u atmosferi. Nije ni čudo da biljke vole više CO2. To je zato što sve biljke ovise o CO2 da bi preživjele. Pokušaj da ljudi eliminiraju CO2 iz atmosfere jednak je tome da neki zli, fiktivni “biljni demon” pokuša eliminirati kisik iz atmosfere, izazivajući masovno gušenje cijele ljudske rase. As the following science diagram shows, carbon dioxide is necessary for plants to breathe. Without it, they would suffocate in minutes: Not only is carbon dioxide necessary for all plant respiration via photosynthesis, it’s also the key ingredient used by plants to synthesize nearly every medicinal molecule that’s loved by herbalists, natural medicine practitioners and even medical cannabis advocates. All cannabinoids are made out of carbon dioxide, for example. This includes CBD and THC. For those of you who aren’t chemists, every line segment in the molecular maps shown below represents a carbon bond. Double lines are double carbon bonds. Tim sa sveučilišta Geneva napravio je velik iskorak nakon što su uspješno teleportirali kvantno stanje fotona u kristal uz pomoć 25 kilometara optičkog vlakna – time su srušili vlastiti rekord otprije 10 godina kad su uspjeli prenijeti informaciju na udaljenost od 6 km. Kvantna teleportacija uključuje kretanje sitnih djelića informacija s jednog na drugo mjesto – u trenutku, putem fenomena poznatog kao kvantna isprepletenost. Zaplitanje se događa kad dvije povezane čestice djeluju kao blizanci, čak i kad su razdvojeni. To znači da se informacije u trenu mogu prenijeti od jedne do druge čestice, bez njihovog međusobnog kontakta. Istraživači su fascinirani kvantnom teleportacijom jer bi ona mogla revolucionirati način prijenosa podataka. Teslina najveća baterija protiv nestanka struje
Elon Musk i Tesla Energy objavili su da će u saveznoj australskoj državi Južna Australija do kraja godine sagraditi najveću bateriju na svijetu koja će pohranjivati energiju iz 99 vjetroturbina i omogućiti regiji da uvijek ima dovoljno struje, čak i pri najvećoj potrošnji. Dakako, neće se raditi o jednoj ogromnoj Duracelki, nalik onoj kakvu imate u daljinskom svog TV-a, već o mreži Powerpack baterijskih jedinica koje će biti uvezene u jedan sistem od 100 megawata, što bi moglo biti dovoljno za energetske potrebe čak 30.000 domaćinstava. U septembru prošle godine snažna oluja je teško oštetila energetsku infrastrukturu Južne Australije, čime je oko 1,7 miliona stanovnika ostalo bez struje. Tesla wins giant battery contract in Australia, has 100-day deadline
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has won an Australian contract to install the world's biggest grid-scale battery, in what experts say will be a litmus test for the reliability of large-scale renewable energy. Tesla's CEO Elon Musk, known for his bold approach to cars, clean energy and space exploration, trumped dozens of competing proposals to build the gigantic lithium-ion battery that will serve as emergency back-up power for South Australia - a state racked by outages. But under the agreement, Tesla must deliver the 100-MW battery within 100 days of the contract being signed or it will be free - a commitment Musk made in a Tweet in March. "There will be a lot of people that will look at this -'Did they get it done within 100 days? Did it work?'" Musk told reporters in South Australia's capital city of Adelaide. "We are going to make sure it does." The battery, designed to light up 30,000 homes if there is a blackout, will be built on a wind farm operated by France's Neoen - parts of which are still under construction. Musk said failing to deliver the project in time would cost his company "$50 million or more", without elaborating. It will be the largest lithium-ion battery storage project in the world, overtaking an 80 megawatt-hour facility in California, also built using Tesla batteries. Over the last three years, South Australia has decided to shut down its coal-fired power stations and instead rely on wind, solar and gas. In particular it has raced ahead of the rest of the country in turning to wind power, which supplies 40 percent of its energy. The move has been applauded by environmentalists but left the state prone to outages as there is no way to store enough energy when the wind doesn't blow. In September, South Australia's 1.7 million residents were left without power, some of them for up to two weeks, when the grid overloaded and collapsed. The battery is aimed at getting around the problem of inadequate storage. "Cost-effective storage of electrical energy is the only problem holding us back from getting all of our power from wind and solar," said Ian Lowe a professor of science at Australia's Griffith University. "This project is a significant innovation to demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale storage."

Dozens of companies from 10 countries, including privately owned Lyon Group, working with U.S. power company AES Corp (AES.N), expressed interest in the project. Now the sector is waiting to see if Musk can make good on his promise. "Tesla has been telling the world that it can and will finish the project within three months, said a source at a Korean competitor to Tesla, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. "It seems that confidence helped Tesla win, but typically this kind of project takes six months so we have to wait and see whether or not Tesla can do it," the source said. Lithium-ion batteries have been in widespread use since about 1991, but mostly on a small scale, such as in laptops and cell phones. A typical lithium-ion battery can store 150 watt-hours of electricity in 1 kilogram of battery, representing more than double the capacity of nickel batteries. For their proponents who have long been pushing for grander use, the success of Musk's big South Australian experiment will be key to greater acceptance. "For lithium technology to take off on a global scale, they clearly need the storage capacity to make sure renewables can deliver 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Adrian Griffin, a geologist who specializes in lithium extraction.
